Equity is nothing but ownership; ownership in Business.
Shares are one of the best long-term investments in the financial market place. However, it can be a precarious proposition due to the risks involved in potential returns. The level of risk involved varies but, if you want to make money, you can't cut out all the risk. It’s best to take help of an experienced and trustworthy expert who will guide you on when, where and how to invest.
When you buy some equity shares of a company, you are buying that shares into the ownership in the business. As an investor, you are a fractional owner of a company. When the new shares are issued by the company to the investors directly,on that time it's called "primary market", where the transaction happens directly between company & Investor.
The investors, who have bought the any company's shares from the primary market, cannot sell back that shares to the company whose shares they are holding in their demat account. In such case they will have to look for a buyer to sell the that company's shares. A virtual market place is created for the benefit of such sellers and buyers called as "Stock Exchanges", where equity share are bought and sold. The stock exchanges are called as "Secondary Markets".
For Example :- if you hold 100 shares of XYZ Company out of total 1000 shares floated by the company – you are 1% owner in XYZ’s business. So if XYZ will make profit you will get your share from dividends and price appreciation but if company makes losses your capital will go down(that will be reflected in stock price).
